Operating Systems Explained
Ruth Mekonnen textbook
Chapter 3
Processes
A process is a program in execution: code, data, a stack and the operating system's record of its state.
The operating system offers each process the illusion of a private machine — an abstraction that makes multitasking possible.
Context switching saves one process's state and restores another's. It is essential, but every switch carries a cost.
